Privacy blinds are great for the home, but they can be a bit drab. On the other hand, curtains can add a lot of flair to your space while also keeping it warm and inviting. There are benefits and drawbacks to each, but as a renter, you’re usually stuck with one or the other. However, this is not inevitable; regardless of your situation, you can avoid picking between curtains and blinds.

Use curtains in addition to blinds to combine the benefits of both. Using window brackets or command hooks, you can quickly and easily cover your blinds, including vertical blinds, without having to drill any holes in your walls. (We didn’t use tension rods because they rarely work with blinds.)

First Things First

Before you hang curtains, make sure you know the exact height and width of your window. You can calculate the amount of fabric or curtain length required and the length of the curtain rod based on the width. Buy a curtain rod that is a few inches longer than the width of your window to avoid any wobbling when you hang the curtains.

Tip

Installing a curtain rod above a window and dressing it with floor-length drapes will visually expand the room.

Don’t ruin your walls by drilling holes in them, instead try one of these creative curtain-hanging methods!

Install Brackets or Adhesive Hooks

To avoid damaging your walls, hang your curtain rods from the headrail. At the very top of your blinds is a horizontal bar called a headrail. In the event that you can, try to acquire items that are designed for use with headrails. If you attach the brackets to the headrail instead of the wall, you won’t have to make any wall holes. The screws required to attach the brackets to the headrail are typically included with curtain rods. But if you don’t have any, standard screws can be purchased from any hardware store.

The simplest solution for hanging curtains over vertical blinds is to attach curtain brackets to the blind’s headrail. However, you may be able to improve the look of your Venetian blinds by attaching adhesive hooks to the wall on either side of the window. Make sure the hooks you buy can support at least five pounds of weight if you decide to go that route. A heavy curtain rod may require more than two adhesive hooks to keep it in place. Put in a third rod’s worth of screws just above the window’s center.

Do not use a tension rod to suspend drapes or blinds above a window that has blinds installed. You can only hang very light curtains from a tension rod because of the rods’ limited weight capacity. The best option for a no-drill installation is to use brackets or command hooks.

Put Fabric Curtains on Curtain Rod

You can either buy ready-made curtains or, if you’re handy with a needle and thread, make your own. In either case, the curtain rod must be threaded through a pocket in the curtain fabric. To begin, you should pull your curtains taught on the rod so that they cover the entire width of the rod and the window when closed.

Place Curtain Rod on Brackets or Hooks

Then, anchor each end of your curtain rod in a wall bracket. Verify that the curtain rod is hung straight from the wall or window and that the curtain is balanced before hanging it. Make sure the curtains and blinds work as expected by opening and closing them.

In order to regulate the amount of light entering a room, a combination of blinds and curtains is recommended. You can open one or both to let in daylight during the day, and then shut them again at night if you need to get some sleep.

Add another layer of security to your home by combining curtains and blinds. When left unattended, curtains can be opened, allowing neighbors a glimpse inside. Close the blinds and draw the curtains, and your privacy will be safe from prying eyes. You can do your work uninterrupted by thoughts of the outside world.

Curtains are functional, and they also look pretty good. Privacy, light regulation, and aesthetics can all be achieved with a combination of blinds and curtains that are tailored to your exact specifications.

How to Hang Curtains over Blinds without using Nails and Drills

If you want to hang curtains over blinds, here are three simple, no-drill methods to do so. The first option is also our top pick. If you read on, you’ll find out the reason.

  • Mounting vertical blinds to window frames with brackets.
  • Employing Velcro
  • Venetian blinds are ideal for using command hooks.

Using Window Brackets (perfect for vertical blinds)

Items required;

  1. Clips for curtain rods
  2. Rod for curtains
  3. Curtain material, of course.
  4. Screws

Let’s all get to work, whether we own or rent, and mount the blinds’ hardware.

Step 1: Install your brackets on your headrail

In the beginning, what is a headrail? The blind’s mechanism is operated by pulling down on the headrail, which is located at the blind’s very top. Furthermore, the mechanism is what allows you to raise and lower your Venetian blinds horizontally, as well as turn your vertical blinds left and right.

NoNo brackets, available on Amazon, are simple to install and do not require any holes to be made in the wall. So, set your brackets and install them on both ends of your headrail bar. As a follow-up, you should readjust the parameters until a snug, secure fit is achieved.

Find the NoNo brackets you’ve been looking for.

Step 2: Install your curtain rod on your brackets for easy mobility

Now that you have your brackets in place, you can raise your bar.

But before you can mount the rod in the brackets, you need to hang the curtains from it. Finally, tighten the single bracket onto the rod until it is rock solid. The screws for the NoNo brackets don’t require a screwdriver.

This method of hanging drapes usually takes between 5 and 10 minutes to finish.

What makes curtain rods better than tension rods is described below.

  • Pulling curtains off tension rods is a bit of a pain.
  • Curtains on a tension rod are too light for larger windows. Larger windows may require curtain rods. If you’re still using vertical blinds, you may want to consider this. In addition, it can carry your heavy drapes with ease.

Using Velcro

It’s necessary to have the proper hardware

  1. Your cornice can be fastened all the way around with Velcro.
  2. Drapery material

Curtains can be hung over blinds in a room without drilling holes by using Velcro.

Here, attach the Velcro’s adhesive side to the inside of the bar that runs along your cornice or headrail. After that, simply attach your curtains to the opposite side for a perfect fit.

Use Velcro that is half an inch wide if you’re attaching it to a sheer fabric like silk for your curtains. In addition, when hanging curtains made of heavier fabric, it’s best to use a Velcro strap with a wider opening.

If you want to use blackout curtains to achieve a specific ambience in a room or home, or if you need complete darkness in a business setting, this is a good way to do it.

The drawback of this method of hanging curtains is that you will be unable to slide the drapes back and forth across the windows.

Using Command Hooks

All the stuff you’ll need

  1. Strong, 5-pound capacity, extra-large command strip hooks in brushed nickel (to match most wall and ceiling colors). It’s sold on the Amazon website.
  2. Command picture hanging strips are extra strong, able to support up to 12 pounds. Find it here.
  3. Thinner than an inch (a 1-inch rod won’t fit into your command hook) curtain rod.

It’s time to begin.

First, make a U-shaped bend in your picture hanging strip, bringing the two ends together. And then flex laterally (from left to right) to make the Velcro adhere.

Second, with the lid off of the unused side of the strip, attach it to the command hook’s back. Then squeeze it firmly for a minute, to ensure a good bond.

Step 3: Next, uncover the picture hanging strip’s adhesive side by removing the lid. Add the hook to the wall afterward. Keep the hook pressed against the wall for about 10 seconds. Next, remove your command hook from the landing strip. You needn’t fret; the strip is still securely fastened to the wall.

Fourth, after pressing or pushing the command strip firmly against the wall for 30 seconds, reattach the hook to the strip.

Step 5: Do the same thing for the opposite hook on the opposite end of the wall. The hook needs to be left on the wall for three hours to fully adhere.

This brings us to Step 6: Hanging the Curtains. But before you can hang the bar from the hook, you’ll need to put the curtains on the bar.

A word to the wise: use sheer curtains rather than heavy drapes if you don’t want to risk damaging your picture-hanging command hooks and strips.

As you can see, hanging curtains doesn’t require any special tools or the services of a handyman, and neither do you need to drill holes in your walls.

The windows must be accurately measured before the curtains can be hung over brackets.

If you mess up here, your window coverings and home’s decor could take a major hit. Obviously, that’s not what you’re going for. Okay, so let’s begin.

Taking Measurements

Materials Required

  1. The use of a measuring tape
  2. Pen
  3. Item of paper

Here are the five steps you need to take to get the right curtain size for your window:

  1. To begin, select an implementation strategy. The brackets method is highly recommended due to its simplicity and speed of installation. If you’re going to use brackets, it’s recommended that you purchase curtains that are wider than the window itself.
  2. Determine how much of the window’s width you want to be covered by the curtains. Make sure you measure past the vertical and horizontal ends of your window frame. Curtain length is measured from the point where they will begin to the point where they will end.
  3. Think about how high you’d like your curtains to hang before you buy them. So, measure the length of your blinds from the ceiling to the floor if you plan on using the Velcro or window bracket method. If you plan on installing command hooks, take your measurements higher, probably starting close to the ceiling and ending on the floor.
  4. In this final step, you take the maximum value and the minimum value from steps 2 and 3, respectively. It may be difficult to find curtains in your exact size, so you can move on to purchasing curtains that fall somewhere in the middle.

As long as you’re here, I might as well give you some advice on how to properly hang curtains instead of blinds. In contrast, achieve a picture-perfect decor in your house or room;

DOs

  1. If you want to replace your vertical blinds with horizontal ones and buy new curtains, you should decide which type of blinds you want before you buy the curtains. Generalizing, roller blinds and Venetian blinds go better with curtains than other blinds. Now if you’re going with timber blinds, you should use drapes in warm colors. Curtains in a dark hue or with complementary colors are recommended if your home is decorated in cool tones.
  2. Curtains and blinds should be hung low to the ceiling if the room is limited in height. And hang your drapes so that they hang an extra 30-60 cm outside the window. By doing so, you can give the impression of higher ceilings and more spacious rooms by making the windows appear more expansive.
  3. Curtains should cover at least two-thirds of the window when used in conjunction with blinds. If you anticipate frequently releasing them, do this.
  4. Curtains, when used in conjunction with blinds, can transform a room from cold and uninviting to warm and welcoming. Curtains and blinds work well together, and you should definitely think about using them together if your kitchen or any other room in your house has large glass windows. In the daytime, you can let in more light by rolling up the blinds. This will give your home a newer look without affecting your personal space or décor in any way. Combine the warmth and coziness of roman blinds, which are ideal for this purpose, with the privacy and light blockage of blackout drapes.
  5. The drapes and blinds should be the same color as the rod. A shiny rod, especially one made of gold, should be avoided at all costs. Instead, choose matte-finished hardware to go with your window covering.
  6. You can also update your window covering by adding decorative elements like tiebacks and tassels. Don’t be shy about wearing them as accessories.

DON’Ts

  1. A printed drapery would look great in your home, but it would be a shame if the matching blinds ruined the effect. The standard for window coverings is a monochromatic blind with a patterned curtain. You shouldn’t go crazy with the patterning.
  2. Don’t use the same curtains everywhere in the house if you care about style. This is meant to be taken in terms of layout. Try out various curtain styles in various rooms. By doing so, you’ll brighten up the space with additional color.
  3. Avoid using a too-narrow bar if you want your curtains to always cover your windows.
  4. Please don’t attach blinds beyond the window’s casing. If you do this, your home will look very strange.

You now know how to hang curtains over blinds, which is useful whether you value privacy or the varied shades of sunlight that enter through sliding glass doors. However, I believe you would also enjoy some suggestions for decorating your room with curtains and blinds. Obviously, someone would.

How to Hang Curtains Over Blinds the Easy Way

Kwik-Hang curtain rod brackets are the simplest alternative to drilling holes in the wall when hanging curtains.

To hang curtains over blinds using Kwik-Hang brackets, follow these three simple steps:

  1. Put a Kwik-Hang bracket in the window casing by tapping it in with a hammer.
  2. Curtains should be inserted onto the rod by threading them through the rod.
  3. Simply place the curtain rod inside the bracket.

To avoid damage, blinds should not extend past the window casing. Curtains over blinds require careful planning to make the most of the available window space. Unattractive and sloppy-looking mounting hardware is exposed when blinds are installed outside the window frame.

Use an inside mount for your blinds and longer curtain rods to accommodate wider window coverings if you want your windows to appear larger.

Let’s take a look at some stylish ways to drape curtains over common window coverings.

  • Awnings that go horizontally
  • Roller blinds
  • Shades with cells
  • Roller blinds
  • Roll-up blinds

Design Ideas for Hanging Curtains Over Blinds

To replace your blinds with curtains, are you? Some of our most favored styles are showcased below.

Curtains Over Horizontal Blinds

It is currently chic to layer curtains over horizontal or Venetian blinds. They can be opened fully, closed, or tilted to a variety of angles, allowing you to control the amount of light and privacy you let in.

Vinyl, aluminum, wood, and faux wood are just some of the materials from which you can choose when shopping for horizontal blinds.

One helpful hint: consider color. Warm up a room with wooden-toned blinds and colorful curtains. Or, you could layer white curtains over white blinds for a similarly illuminating effect. For what kind of style are you going? A lot can depend on the colors you use for various components.

Curtains Over Roman Shades

Roman shades are a stylish replacement for plain old blinds. Traditional Roman shades are typically opaque and can only be drawn up or down, limiting your ability to regulate the amount of light coming in through your windows.

Expert advice: try out some textured finishes. It’s not always best to go with a smooth fabric or wood. However, textured treatments, such as woven wood shades or velvet drapes, can give your room a sense of depth and style.

Curtains Over Cellular Shades

Cellular shades are great because they provide extra insulation, light control, and privacy. The honeycomb pattern is transparent but still offers privacy. Because they prevent warm air from escaping and allow cool air to enter, internal cells are a cost-effective and environmentally friendly choice. Blackout shades can be drawn for total seclusion.

Use caution when installing matching window coverings throughout your home. If you’re stuck with blinds that you can’t afford to replace, try switching to new curtains to give each room a distinct look.

Curtains Over Vertical Blinds

Sliding doors and large windows benefit greatly from the horizontal rather than vertical movement of vertical blinds.

Many different colors, materials, and widths of vertical blinds are on the market. You can prevent the slats from shifting when the windows are open by limply chaining them together at the bottom.

As a word of advice, don’t go crazy with the patterns. For maximum impact, pair a print with a solid color. They won’t be visible during the day if you keep your blinds up. You should hang curtains rather than blinds to display a lovely pattern.

Curtains Over Roller Shades

The first roller shades were made of white vinyl, but today’s versions are much more stylish. You won’t have to give up fashion while sticking to a strict budget thanks to the wide range of materials they come in.

Roller shades are the best option if you need maximum light during the day and total privacy at night.
