In today’s world, a quillow is a must-have for campers and travelers. If you know how to sew, you can make a quillow blanket for far less than you’d pay to buy one.

If you haven’t heard of a quillow before, it’s essentially a quilt with a pocket sewed on it at a strategic location so that it can be folded up and used as a cushion.

Depending on your needs, you can scale them up or down and alter their appearance however you see fit.

Step-By-Step Guide On How To Make A Quillow Blanket

A quillow can be made by anyone who can sew and has access to a few yards of cloth. If you think you can handle it, we have a simple, step-by-step tutorial to help you get going.

Step #1. Prepare your materials

It is important to gather the necessary equipment and supplies before beginning any endeavor. Make your selection from the fabric options provided.

Plush fabric is great for baby blankets, and fabrics like fleece, flannel, and cotton make wonderfully toasty quilts. Waterproof fabric is recommended for outdoor use, such as at a picnic or when camping.

You’ll also want to make sure there’s some sort of cushioning or insulation sandwiched between your top and bottom layers of fabric. The batting of your quilt shouldn’t be too bulky so that you can easily tuck it into the pillow case. Many people opt for cotton batting, but wool and polyester are also viable options.

Do you know how much material you’ll require? Two pieces of cloth measuring 1.8 meters by 1.5 meters are required for an adult blanket, and 0.5 meters are needed for the pillow pocket. To make a baby blanket with a 36-by-44-inch size and still have enough fabric for a pillow case, you will need 1.4 meters of fabric.

Step #2. Sew the main fabric

Layer one fabric over another so that the designs are touching.

Lay the batting material on top of the two pieces and pin the edges of the layers together. Quilt batting needs to be cut to the exact dimensions of the fabric.

Leave a half-inch seam allowance while stitching the layers together. If you want to turn the blanket right side out, you’ll need a 12-inch opening somewhere along the edge. A pencil can be used to gently round off sharp edges.

Finish the quilt by stitching a 14-inch seam around all sides and the opening. Quilt edges will be held in place and the quilt will look more finished.

Step #3. Sew the pocket for the pillow

To make a pillow case, simply re-create the blanket’s envelope shape (without the batting). Make a pillowcase out of the smaller squares.

You should check that the quilt’s edges are aligned before you begin sewing.

Step #4. Assemble the quillow

Put the larger blanket down flat, then pin the pillow pocket to the upper middle of the quilt.

The pocket should have a seam on three sides. Do not close it; instead, leave the top open to store your folded quilt.

Step #5. Fold the quillow

Lay the blanket, pocket side down. To fold the quilt, first fold it in half down its length, and then fold it in half from top to bottom. To complete the pillow, turn the pocket inside out and place it on top.

When Do You Use A Quillow?

For camping

To use the blanket’s pockets, place them face down on the floor. Using a thirds folding method, first fold the quilt lengthwise, then fold it in half from top to bottom. The finished pillow will have the inside of the pocket facing out.

The waterproof quillow can be used to set this on the ground at picnics. This way, you can stay clean and dry after rolling about in the mud or playing in the sand without having to change clothes.

When traveling, a quillow is a convenient alternative to packing both a cushion and a blanket because it takes up much less space.

For travel

You would want to be as relaxed as possible during any form of travel. When flying for an extended period of time, feel free to bring along your trusty quillow.

If you do a lot of driving, you may save space in the backseat by folding them up into pillows.

For playtime

You can use a Quillow for anything, not just sleeping. Perhaps they would be most useful to children.

Quillows are exercise blankets or play mats that kids can use to keep busy. Having children tuck their blankets into pillows after playtime is a great way to teach kids responsibility.

Conclusion

You can have fun with your kids while making quillows. They can learn to produce a quillow blanket that they can use or give as a gift to others on special occasions like birthdays and the holidays.

You may also personalize your Quillows as you like by adding things like fabric paint, fluffy glue, and glitter. To prevent the quilt from flapping around and to maintain a tidier home, zippers and buttons can be used.

You can play around with your quillow as much as you like; it’s a fun activity to do with your kids.
